We love reading at Birkdale Community Hub and Library and we want to encourage children to visit the library.

So, what better way to do this than to join in and celebrate World Book Day; a day to celebrate books and reading.

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) created World Book Day back in 1995.

The UK celebrates the day on the first Thursday in March. The aim is for children and young people to read for pleasure and share their love of reading and stories together.

The World Book Day charity has the aim of reaching more children from lower-income backgrounds and hard to reach communities. Book tokens are sent directly to schools, nurseries or direct to students at home. Each year there are designated World Book Day titles.

We have all 12 World Book Day books, all available to borrow from the library.

  • Bedtime for the Burpee Bears
  • Being an Ally
  • Billy’s Bravery
  • Boot It!
  • Dave Pigeon. (Bookshop Mayhem!)
  • A Dragon Realm Adventure
  • Kay’s Brilliant Brains
  • Lifesize Creepy Crawlies
  • Marvel Spider-Man: The Amazing Pocket Guide
  • Strange worlds Travel Agency: Adventure in the Floating Mountain
  • The Boy with Wings: Attack of the Rampaging Robot
  • You Choose Your Adventure

.

Of course, children can get their own copy of a WBD book by exchanging their £1 book token at a bookshop or get a £1 off a regular priced book, but it is great for them to be able to read some others.

Access to books is so important. A survey from the National Literacy Trust found that half a million children do not own a single book which is why libraries are so important.

So come in and see our selection of World Book Day Titles and whet your appetite.
