Volunteering
We would love to hear from you if you are interested in joining our volunteer team. There are a variety of roles – long term, short term, regular or occasional. Some are based at the Station Master’s House or the Library Room at Birkdale Methodist Church or home based. Meeting the public and knowing I’m playing a greater role in contributing to the local community. I love surrounding myself with books and hope to boost my reading choices.
Many years ago, I worked for Sefton Library and last year I was looking for a project, passion and purpose outside my home/work life. Joining the Birkdale Community Hub and Library felt a perfect fit.

I’ve always had a busy life, mixing my career with various volunteering roles from chairing an athletic club to treasurer of a samba drumming band.
Shortly after my mum died in 2019, the small company I worked for no longer had a role for me. I had also just relinquished my official duties with the band so I was really floundering. As lock down commenced I struggled even more for a purpose in life.
Making face masks for the NHS didn’t quite cut it! However the Hub came calling and we began, carefully distanced or home based, processing library books.
I’ve never looked back! Aside from feeling useful again, I have a structure to my week and I’ve made a new network of lovely people who also volunteer. The Hub as well as the spin off at the Methodist Church, are fabulous places and as a Birkdale villager I’m proud to have played a part in bringing the spaces to life. It’s made my life much fuller, in all respects.

Being able to use skills acquired during my career to develop something for the Birkdale community where I live has been very rewarding. I’m retired now and it’s good to be back working in a team with the other trustees and volunteers but without the pressures of employment.
My role is generally IT which includes the website, comms, library system, PCs, small developments etc, but as a trustee you can be involved in many aspects of charity which is a great learning experience and keeps the grey matter working.
