Birkdale Community Hub and library has been awarded The King’s Award for Voluntary Service, an honour which recognises “outstanding work by local volunteer groups to support their local communities”.  The honour is the equivalent of an MBE and is awarded for life. It is also rather rare – last year only two community groups in Merseyside received the award.

A huge amount of work goes into running our successful charity and our volunteers are rightly proud of their success.

We were nominated for this award by Merseyrail, once we had accepted the nomination a group of trustees and volunteers got together to present our story to two adjudicators, one a retired vice-chancellor, the other an ex-judge.  The whole-day interview was challenging but so rewarding – it really gave us a chance to reflect on what we had achieved.
